Munnar

Overview

Munnar, often called the “Kashmir of South India”, has a rich history that blends nature, colonial heritage, and local traditions. The name Munnar means “three rivers” in Malayalam, referring to the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala rivers. The region was originally inhabited by the Muthuvan tribal community, who lived in harmony with the dense forests and hills.

During the late 19th century, the British discovered Munnar’s cool climate and fertile hills, which reminded them of the English countryside. Soon, vast tea plantations were established under pioneers like A.H. Sharp and later managed by the Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company. This transformed Munnar into the tea capital of South India, and even today, sprawling estates remain its main attraction.
